A new general store shopping experience
and nostalgic places to visit

Old mill general store

The problem with owning a store is that it's easy to get burned out. My solution (that I hope works) is to locate affiliate merchants that offer variety and good service while mixing them in with some products I stock and/or source through drop shippers. In this way I can present a wide variety of products that I'd like to see in my store but I'm not responsible for all of the transactions.

Individual item descriptions often lack information that you go searching for elsewhere. By exploring the pages here you'll be able to find some of that missing information in one place. This site is an attempt to share experiences, products and merchandising trends with you in a fun manner.

Objective

Purchasing would seem to have become easier with the Internet. Yet selling involves a wide variety of factors. With traditional general store shopping you were limited to special orders and what was on the shelves. Today our choices can seem overwhelming. It is my objective to provide some direction and fun while shopping.

As I develop these pages you will find locations that you can visit for that old time experience of going to the store. You will also find groups of merchandise offering competitive prices and quality service.

Means

A shopping example, using items that I am very familiar with, would be supplies for furniture construction. Doing a price comparison on every option and item that I may want is time consuming and can easily result in overspending on some items.

My shopping patterns for concealed hinges will find a low priced source. May I assume that their lumber is also reasonably priced? No. Sources will inevitably vary all the way down the supply chain. My experience from manufacturing, securing and retailing allows me to make deductions that may not occur to you.

Resources

I will be adding exclusive items as well as drop ship items in my store. From the drop ship source of over 100 suppliers I have currently selected less than ten to feature. Some of these suppliers are only competitive on select items, due in part to their purchasing contracts. I present items that are competitive in price and service. For many items you will be need to request an invoice to pay by credit through Paypal. Paying by money order or check will reduce fees on purchases and may provide more competitive pricing. Give me a call or use the contact form to request a quote.

At the Trading Post you’ll find a list of partners that I recommend. Many offer the familiar online experience while complementing and adding to the items I list.

Destinations

Make shopping fun, after you have saved time locating what you want, I offer destinations to experience real general stores.

I’m getting ready, the same as Gibbs Sweet Station. Please join our mailing list. I will inform you of new content about once a month while I am adding oportunities and information to General Store Galaxy.-Sean McAde & New Boston Furniture.

General Store ice cream

Now for a few destinations
In Plam Springs, California stop by the Ruddy General Store Museum. If passing through Story, Indiana stop for lunch and some general store shopping on main street. Closer to my home you can grab an ice cream at Gibbs Sweet Station (during the summer)in the old general store of New Boston, Michigan. Details such as the sign in the window may lead me off on interesting tangents B-ware ye ma git lost heer. Henry Ford Museum

Some of my past clients suggested that I mention my experience. Here it is as brief as I can.:

  • Grew up on a farm
  • Sold upholstery, drapery and carpet
  • Studied architecture
  • Graduated with an Interior Design degree
  • Sold bedding and fabric
  • Sold furniture
  • Started making furniture
  • Sold greenhouses
  • Worked for a sculptor
  • Made custom furniture
  • Sold watches
  • Sold millwork
  • Sold discount furniture
  • Made store fixtures and closet interiors
  • Taught woodworking
  • Formed New Boston Furniture
  • Started General Store shopping Galaxy

If you're wondering where the old mill pictured above is, it's hidden down a lane on the Huron River in New Boston, MI. Even some local residents have no idea that it still grinds feed and will sell you dog food or farm gates.
