A great vegetable garden

If you've looked at these pages and seen the pile of brush below I'd like to offer you a view of what Dee had accomplished in nine months last year. The pictures here are looking over the hedge at the new plantings. Stay tuned for more garden updates!

My gardens

This is the year of my garden supplies wish list. I do not see myself doing much gardening this year. Join me as I contemplate and plan for an abundance of agricultural projects over the coming years. I will share with you my goals and experiences for a vibrant garden, by pulling together gardening supplies and lawn maintenance resources.

I am not new to gardening or garden design. On the farm, growing up, the farm supplies provided all the tools needed for gardening. I had a beautiful city garden, with garden benches and garden sculpture, that took only two years to establish a decade ago. The residence between there and here only allowed for a crop of tomatoes, so I did not need a lot of gardening supplies. When I gave up city life for country living my garden tool needs changed. I was excited to get some organic and heirloom vegetable seeds in the ground and my flowering plants growing.

The lot I have have now has some unique features. I look out my window to my new neighbor, working to restore and create, using transplanted and limited garden supplies. I will be using our combined experiences to share with you useful garden supply and agricultural tips this season.

Pests

Our properties are in a small town and back up to a large park system. Directly behind us there are several hundred acres of land cut off from the public areas of the park. This spring I came home to find that the deer had nosed out the tulips at the back door. The rabbits are starting to dart around the hedges as I go out in the morning. These are just a few of the concerns we have in our yards.

Dee’s most prolific garden supplies have been wire screening placed around transplanted shrubs to keep the rabbits and ground hogs away from them. She had talked about fencing which is probable once she found out I had deer in the yard. Along with these pests we have moles, the consequence of grubs I assume, to contend with. Then there are a variety of insects such as Japanese beetles that will require some type of insect deterrent.

Maintaining a garden

The property dates back to a nineteenth century homestead, so some of the plantings between our two yards go back a long time. Our gardening supplies this spring are a combination of loppers and a sharing of plant stock. As Dee digs up beds to add a shrub I get a few more Iris. Fred who owned the two properties passed away last January. He had neglected his yard and gardens from the age of 92 to 100, so we have some catching up to do.

When I move in four years ago, the first garden supplies on my road to what I hoped would be a fruitful urban agriculture experience were a rented Toro Dingo and a shovel. The Dingo is described as a compact utility loader with 35 versatile attachments.

I was able to spend $700 for a weekend renting the Dingo to dig holes for transplanting the shrubs I wanted to keep and digging out the junk. Dee is cutting out the old growth and plans on using a weed killer to eliminate the stumps. I’ll keep you informed on this process. The plants to be moved she is digging and moving by hand.

I had the Dingo to till up the large garden plot and grade the areas around the house where I had removed shrubbery. Dee has been working like a busy bee every warm day this winter and spring digging up plots and moving plants. The garden supplies I used like the Dingo allowed me to move and eliminate about the same amount of plants in a weekend that my next door neighbor will accomplish in four months. And then she will still have the roots to deal with. I wanted my plots settled so I could putter around as soon as possible. I think Dee likes puttering around while she gets her plots ready. Stay with me as I share stories about garden supplies and urban agriculture with you.

Plants, Animals & Tools

I am a slightly crude gardener although I aspire to experience the exquisite. I think it has something to do with growing up on a farm. Mention feeders and I don’ think of hummingbird feeders, I think of pig troughs. An attractive gate to me is a wrought iron farm gate large enough to drive a John Deere through. Garden clothing is nothing more than the pair of jeans I have on, but knee pads are something I’m beginning to keep close at hand.

I will cover a bit for every one needing garden supplies to take care of the yard, landscaping and flower beds. The vegetable garden, your horses, livestock, poultry, bees or a sustainable agriculture plot can be an enjoyable extension of your farm or home garden. Grab all the information you can and avoid others mistakes. A garden is to enjoy and nourish the mind, body and soul!
